  2. Apple responded with its launch of the iPhone 5 in September, 2012.
  3. Perennial powerhouse Blackberry (formerly Research In Motion--RIM) has been relegated to 8th, missing the Top 5 list, with sales of 34.2 million units and a market share of 2.0%. Though notably absent in new product releases since the Blackberry10 phones would only launch in 2013.
  4. Other notable companies missing the list: Huawei, HTC, and Motorolla.
  5. Looking ahead to 2013, tech industry players Ubuntu/Canonical and Mozilla, are preparing to launch their own smartphone offerings, the Ubuntu Edge and Firefox OS respectively.
