- A supercentenarian describes someone who has reached the age of 110 years or older. The term became popular in 1991 but has been around since the 1970's. Only 2% of supercentenarians live to be 115 years of age. There are less than a thousand proven supercentenarians.
- Jeanne Louise Calment was born to to a wealthy family. Mrs. Calment supposedly met Vincent van Gogh when she was 14 years old and was still riding a bicycle at age 100. She reportedly attributed her longevity to olive oil, which she used on all her food and rubbed into her skin.
- Shigechiyo Izumi apparently drank shÅchÅ«, a Japanese alcoholic beverage distilled from barley, and took up smoking at age 70 (he probably would have lived to 130 had he not). Mr. Izumi lived through 71 Japanese Prime Ministers.
- Lucy Hannah is the oldest African American who ever lived (documented). She died in Michigan on March 21, 1993.
- As of 2007, Marie-Louise Meilleur is the oldest validated Canadian ever and was apparently a vegetarian. She had 10 children over her lifetime and died of a blood clot at age 117.
