- There are currently 169.4 million online adults in the United States, of these, 70 percent receive spam. The technical definition of spam is as follows: An electronic message is "spam" IF: (A) the recipient's personal identity and context are irrelevant because the message is equally applicable to many other potential recipients; and (B) the recipient has not verifiably granted deliberate, explicit, and still-revocable permission for it to be sent.
- Thirty-six percent (36%) of Internet users receive at least 10 spam e-mails a day.
- For a minority of adults, spam is not necessarily dismissed out of hand, but has the potential to get their interest. Fourteen percent (14%) of those who receive spam read it to see what it says and Four percent (4%) of spam recipients have purchased from spam in a 12-month period.
- Internet spam is serious business; the economic impact from time wasted deleting spam is estimated to be $21.6 billion a year.
