 Facts
  1. Up to 80% of spam targeted at Internet users in North America and Europe is generated by a hard-core group of known professional spammers such as those above.
  2. There are currently 169.4 million online adults in the United States, of these, 70 percent receive spam. The technical definition of spam is as follows: An electronic message is "spam" IF: (A) the recipient's personal identity and context are irrelevant because the message is equally applicable to many other potential recipients; and (B) the recipient has not verifiably granted deliberate, explicit, and still-revocable permission for it to be sent.
  3. Thirty-six percent (36%) of Internet users receive at least 10 spam e-mails a day.
  4. For a minority of adults, spam is not necessarily dismissed out of hand, but has the potential to get their interest. Fourteen percent (14%) of those who receive spam read it to see what it says and Four percent (4%) of spam recipients have purchased from spam in a 12-month period.
  5. Internet spam is serious business; the economic impact from time wasted deleting spam is estimated to be $21.6 billion a year.
